A Tail of 4 Paws Animal Rescue is a foster based rescue formed in August 2015 by great friends having the same goal; placing unwanted, homeless dogs with loving, caring people. We met volunteering for a local animal rescue and knew that one day we wanted to start our own rescue. While volunteering, we had met some amazing people who we now call friends and fosters that supported our vision.
Our new rescue has a 501(c)3 status with the IRS, and is approved with the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Additionally, the organization is 100% run by volunteers. We rescue within the state of Illinois focusing on Animal Controls in Southern Illinois as well as locally. Once the dogs are evaluated and matched to an approved, loving foster home, we transport them approximately 6 hours to the Romeoville area.
The first stop on the dog’s journey to their forever home is a bath. This is the first chance we all have to bond with the dogs. Then they are taken to the vet, where they are given a full exam, Rabies vaccine, DHPP vaccine, Bordetella, heartworm check, fecal check, and microchip. Our dogs are also put on heartworm preventative and flea/tick medication. All dogs are spayed or neutered and if needed, receive other medically necessary veterinary care(ex: surgery, treatments, etc). After the dogs are vetted our dogs are next paced in a foster home where they get acclimated to living in a home environment and their personalities emerge and are evaluated. Our foster homes learn about each dog’s own personalities as well as training the dogs to become family pets. We work with dogs on house training, crate training, basic commands, and work on negative behaviors.
Once our dogs are adopted they and their new family become part of our rescue family. We stay in close contact as a resource for the adopter as well as share in the joys of watching their new family member thrive in the new
environment.
It’s been very exciting having our fosters become adopters and our adopters become fosters. We have become a very close knit family and support system.
The West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS) is a volunteer-based, animal welfare organization that was founded in 1972 as a lost-and-found referral service.
At that time, a small group of volunteers, working from their homes, gathered information and maintained records for the purpose of reuniting lost companion animals and their owners.
Soon animal control officers in various townships and counties requested the group's help in locating the owners of unclaimed strays that were being held at their facilities. Over the next 10 years, as both demand and support for their services grew, WSHS was born, and began sheltering homeless animals by opening a small storefront shelter on Chicago's west side along with three additional small satellite shelters in other townships. Today, we have consolidated into one easily accessible and highly visible shelter and adoption facility, housing up to 25 dogs and 60 cats at a time. We operate at full capacity at all times, with animal care and adoptions being provided by three full-time and nine part-time employees and numerous volunteers. We are open to the public six days a week.
The cats and dogs come to us from many sources. Impoundment facilities and the public bring us dogs and cats of all ages that have been abandoned, abused, injured, neglected, and orphaned. A dedicated volunteer base and the retained service of several veterinarians have allowed us to save the lives of and give 600 homeless animals each year new homes. Every animal that is brought to our shelter receives whatever type of veterinary care that is needed, including surgery and hospitalization for trauma cases, long-term care and medication for viral and bacterial infections, and treatment of parasite infestations such as heartworm. Orphaned kittens and puppies, as well as the sick, receive loving care in our foster homes until they are ready for adoption.
We continue to reunite lost animals and their families by maintaining a database with information on over 33,000 pets and their owners, and by providing free pet identification tags. Additionally, we provide microchip pet identification implants for every animal that is adopted from us.
We have an amazing Humane Education Program, which includes adult and youth educational materials, on-site and off-site presentations, birthday parties, summer camp, and tours of the West Suburban Humane Society adoption center.

St. Sophia’s Forgotten Felines is a non-profit foster-based cat rescue in Wheaton, IL. Established in late 2010, St. Sophia’s strives to be the best in temporary care for cats in transition. What does this mean? It means that the cats in our care aren’t intended to stay in our care. Our hope is a forever home for every adoptable cat — no more homeless cats!
